Tbilisi to Kazbegi: How to Get to Stepantsminda (All Options)
The journey from Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is one of the most spectacular drives in the entire Caucasus. The Georgian Military Highway climbs from the Georgian capital at 490 m above sea level over the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m, with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks before descending into the Terek River valley and Stepantsminda at 1,700 m.

The Drive: What to Expect
Tbilisi → Mtskheta (20 km): Flat and urban. Optional stop at Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mtskheta → Ananuri (50 km): The road follows the Aragvi River gorge. Pull over for views of the Zhinvali dam.
Ananuri → Gudauri (30 km): The road climbs steeply to the ski resort of Gudauri at 2,200 m. In winter this section is spectacular but can be icy.
Gudauri → Jvari Pass (10 km): The highest point of the journey at 2,379 m. On a clear day you can see dozens of Caucasian peaks.
Jvari Pass → Stepantsminda (20 km): A dramatic descent into the Terek valley, with the first views of Gergeti Trinity Church appearing around the final bend.
